16-Tonne Road Sweeper — Soft Verge, Bicester

A 16-tonne road sweeper was working along a country road just outside Bicester when it pulled over to let an oncoming vehicle pass. The rear wheels dropped into the soft verge — the truck sank deep enough that it couldn't pull itself out.
How we recovered it
The sweeper was too heavy and too badly stuck for a simple pull. We brought our Isuzu flatbed and set up a controlled winch line to the rear of the sweeper.
Rather than brute-force the pull, we coordinated with the sweeper driver — he drove in reverse while our Isuzu provided steady winch force. Two inputs, one direction. The sweeper slowly came out of the verge and back onto solid road.
No damage to the sweeper, the verge, or the surrounding road. The vehicle was back to work the same day.
The challenge with soft verge recoveries
Soft verges and country roads are one of the hardest recovery environments. The weight of the vehicle drives it deeper every time it tries to move, and the ground can't support a recovery truck's own weight either.
This is why having multiple recovery trucks and the ability to coordinate a winch-and-drive recovery matters — a straight pull would have dug the sweeper in further, and possibly damaged the vehicle.
